Yeah, kind of a double edge sword here. They're praised in the front-end community to help boost speed(which they do) but as I see they have some more improvements to be done.

Although I don't think all is lost with this approach for icons. We just need more research like you're doing here. With time I think this will improve, but as Chris Van Patten says, services like Symbolset use ligatures which in essence is kind of a hack. Maybe Icon Fonts can take better advantage of the PUA instead of using ligatures.

I do also dislike the name of the screen (or the marketing, since that is what it really is). After using it for a couple weeks, it is nice though. Its much cleaner looking, and reading lines of code is easier, less aliasing and ghosted pixels. Added screen real-estate in applications that support retina displays is nice as well.

Still definitely a work-in-progress, but it is no doubt a large upgrade from the current mainstream panels.

hi, Ben, I found your blog while conducting a pretty random search on Google for my uncle, Cyrus Dunkle, of New Jersey. I'm thinking we must be related--my dad's sister was Mary McDonald and she was married to Cyrus Dunkle. Their three children were John, Michael, and Mary (she married Jim DiNardo). Uncle Cy worked in physical chemistry, I think, and I know that at least one of his sons worked for Dupont. Does any of this sound familiar? I'd be curious to know...
